Project of the Sailing
Solo Nonstop Around Sailing
Project by Jarmila and Petr Ondracek
Motto: The Sea still remains good challenge and opportunity for all who
would like to self-knowledge
Introduction
Singlehanded sailing is a high level of sailing activities both at the racing and the cruising. The captain Joshua Slocum was a pioneer at the solo singlehanded world circumnavigation. His historical sailing was with sailing boat SPRAY during years 1895 - 1998. The first singlehanded eastward nonstop sailing was accomplished by Bernard Moitessier within the race Golden Globe in 1968. Because he did not follow the racing rules Sir Robin-Knox Johnston (UK) that finished on the second place was declared as a winner. His sailing boat was 32 ft length and its sailing took 313 days. The first singlehanded nonstop sailor westward is Chay Blyth (UK) on the 60 ft sailing boat for 293 days.
Any Czech sailor has not realized this type of world circumnavigation up to now. Only well-known Czech singlehanded yachtsman Richard Konkolski accomplished the world circumnavigation during races BOC 1982 and 1986 and after the OSTAR in 1972 – 1975 with several stops.
Main objectives and milestones
The primary objective of this project is accomplishing the first Czech nonstop singlehanded sailing world circumnavigation.
Two additional objectives are: sailing will be executed on the 28 ft made is own smallest sailing boat originated from indoor-countries and the record 313 days eastward in the category to 32 ft length will be beated.
Sailing on the board of sloop sailboat SINGA will start no later than in September 2011 from Falmouth- It will be here finished during the year 2012.
The eastward tack of sailing fulfils the generally requested condition for the world circumnavigation – obligatory rounding of the antipodal point in proximity of New Zeeland with start in Europe.
Preparation phase will be realized during passage from Hamburg to Falmouth from June to August 2011.
Route
The main objective of this project is beating of the world record of the single handed Word circumnavigation in the 28 ft LOA class - less than 313 days. The sailing route have to comply with generally accepted requirements. Therefore the track will be follows:
- Start – crossing the line Lizard Point (UK) and Ushant Isl. near Falmouth (August-September 2011)
- Direction and waypoints – Madeira, Canary Isl. Cape Verde, round the Cap of Good Hope, south of the Cap o Leeuwin and the south coast of Tasmania headed to the Cap of Southwest of the Steward Island (New Zeeland). After rounding of the Antipode Point (near the Antipode Isl.), the Cap Horn and back throw the Atlantic around Azores
Finish – the crossing the Start line (in 2012 – less 313 days from the start, about 22 000 Nm).
Crew
The Sailing boat s/y SINGA will be skippered by the author of this project. He will be alone on her board.
